Whalestooth Farm Trading Post
131 Bond Mill Road, Olga
Hours: Our regular business hours are 10am-5pm Monday through Friday. Sometimes we are open late and sometimes we close early. On occasion we are open as late as 9pm but most days we close at 3 pm and pretend it's 5pm. Sometimes we are here on weekends unless we are not here in which case we wouldn't be open. If it is hunting or fishing season we may be open by appointment only unless we are here and open. If you are lucky we might be in early but chances of that are slim. Sometimes we take the day off to help at Eastsound Sporting Goods when they are shortstaffed. There is always the possibility that we aren't open at all on any given day just because we feel like a day off.
New Firearms: We stock a selection of new guns but most of our new gun sales are special order. Most of our new firearms are bought through Davidson's Wholesale. Davidson's backs up every one of their guns purchased from their dealers with a lifetime warranty. Davidson's selection can be found at their Gallery of Guns website. If you don't see what you want just let me know and I can probably get it from one of the other firearms wholesalers.
Used Firearms: We have a pretty good selection of used firearms. Stock varies from day to day so the best thing to do is drop us a note or give us a call. You can also order used guns directly by going to Gunbroker or Guns America. We will receive the guns for you and process the paperwork but a transfer fee of $30 for long guns and $35 for handguns applies.
Consignment Firearms: We accept firearms to sell on consignment. Our regular commission is 20% of the sale price plus expenses related to advertising the firearm. Discounts will apply for multiple firearms. We also charge less to sell guns that were originally purchased from us. Note: A gun left with us for consignment is legally transferred to us so withdrawing a gun from consignment requires federal and state paperwork as well as applicable transfer fees.
Transfers: Inbound transfers are $30 for long guns and $35 for handguns. Notes: Firearms will only be accepted prepaid from other FFL's. All applicable paperwork and waiting periods must be completed just as if you bought the firearm from us but we offer no warranty. Any warranty issues or problems must be dealt with directly with the original seller. Outbound transfers are $25 plus shipping of $20 and insurance of 50 cents per $100 of value. We must also have a valid FFL on file for the dealer receiving the shipment.
Gunsmithing: We have three gunsmiths with different specialties. Most gunsmithing is done in-house for $50 per hour ($25 min.). Prices go up to $60 if you want it done while you wait, $65 if you watch, $70 if you help, $80 if you worked on it yourself, and $100 if you laugh. Specialty work such as hot blueing, painting, parkerizing, stock refinishing, and major machine work is sent out to shops that speacialize in those areas. Quotes for these jobs are given once the other gunsmiths see the jobs.
- APPRAISALS:
- Normally I like to examine firearms "hands-on" before I will offer an appraisal, this is the only truly accurate method, and is highly recommended for valuable antique arms. A "hands-on" appraisal will also provide you with substantial, written documentation on my stationary for insurance purposes.
-
- I am often able to provide the owner with a sight-unseen evaluation based on the owner's description of the weapon(s).
-
- This type of evaluation will only be as accurate as the information I am given and will be reflected as such in the appraisal. In the case of more valuable weapons, a sight-unseen evaluation may not provide sufficient documentation for some insurance purposes.
- For sight-unseen appraisals, I will require as much information from you as possible about the weapon, information such as answers to these questions below (feel free to add more information; the more I have the more accurate the appraisal is likely to be.).
- What are the factory markings, and are they intact?
- What is the caliber or gauge?
- Let me know how much original finish the gun has (using percentages 0 -100%) or has the gun been reblued or replated?
- What condition is the wood or are the handgun grips in? (please note any damages)
- How is the bore, and is the gun in good operating condition?
- Is it a rifle, or is it a carbine?
- Does it have a round, octagon or 1/2 round barrel? How long is the barrel?
- If this is a shotgun: is the gun a double, or single barrel or does it use a pump or semi-automatic action?
- On doubles: Does the gun have double or single triggers? Automatic ejectors?
- Has the gun been altered from standard in any way?
- Are you aware of any factory special order features?
- In addition, it would help a great deal if you can e-mail me a clear digital photo or two, one being a close up of the action, along with the written details.

- Fees for firearms appraisals vary according to the amount of research work involved with each individual weapon. Some examples are given below:
- For a Hands-On appraisal the fees start at $35. per weapon for an appraisal involving relatively small amounts of research, the more difficult the reasearch, the higher the charges. Generally $150. would be about maximum with the average fee being $50. This thorough service will also involve the additional costs of return shipping and carrier insurance for the firearm owner. A digital photographic record of my findings can be provided on a CD for an additional $35.
- For a Sight-unseen evaluation that does not involve much research the fee is: $25. per weapon, answered by e-mail with a second "hardcopy" mailed to your address in a letter.
- as above, with more extensive research involved: approx. $35. - $75. per weapon.
- Sending firearms for appraisal or consignment sale:
- Since I am a federally licensed firearms dealer. As an individual, you may legally ship firearms to me for repair or appraisal. Some notes;
- The postal service will not accept modern handguns (post-1898) except on a dealer to dealer basis, you must use a private carrier; like UPS Next Day Air or Fed-Ex..
- UPS will only ship modern handguns by overnight express, we prefer FedEx 2nd day service, its fast efficient and up to now, hassle free.
- Antique handguns may be shipped by any method you like,United States Postal Service insured or Registered Mail has proven to be the most reliable for us.
- Antique long-guns may be shipped by any method, United States Postal Service insured or Registered Mail has proven to be the most reliable for us.
- Modern long-guns may be shipped by any method you like.
- Make ceretain that all guns are UNLOADED and DO NOT SHIP AMMUNITION IN THE SAME BOX AS THE WEAPON.
Return shipment to the owner: Shipping charges from the owner to me and/or back to the owner are solely the responsibility of the owner. Return will cost $30 plus cost of insurance.
